Surviving in a Polarized Church: Dr. Richard Gaillardetz teaches in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Religious Studies Program at the University of Toledo, where he holds the Murray/Bacik endowed chair of Catholic Studies. He has published seven books, including The Church in the Making, A Daring Promise: A Spirituality of Marriage, Ecclesiology for a Global Church, and Teaching with Authority. He has received numerous awards from the Catholic Press Association, served on the Board of the Catholic Theological Society, was the Catholic delegate on the U.S. Catholic-Methodist Dialogue (2000-2005), is a past recipient of the Sophia Award from the Washington Theological Union in recognition of a theologian’s contribution to the life of the church, and chairs his University’s Jewish-Christian-Muslim Dialogue Committee. His pastoral booklets offer reflections on liturgical, catechetical and pastoral ministry. His articles have appeared in Theological Studies, Origins, Commonweal, Louvain Studies, and National Catholic Reporter. He is a popular speaker at conferences, and enjoys leading parish retreats.
